Pandiaspora - Mobilising and Securing Brain Gain for Nigeria

Welcome to the official website of Pandiaspora

PANDIASPORA is the Professional Association of Nigerian Doctors in the Diaspora. Pandiaspora is a third sector iNGO, enlisting the skills and energy of Nigerian Doctors in the Diaspora to support  improvements in health, education and social welfare in Nigeria. It is the main coordinating body in Nigeria, harnessing the knowledge and expertise of medical professionals from the diaspora to benefit the health and well-being of Nigerians at home. Our volunteers are dedicated to support the health and educational systems to achieve the targets set forth in the UN Health and Education Millennium Development Goals by 2015. The organisation accomplishes its work by sponsoring sustainable free medical mission programmes in communities around the country and by supporting improvements to health and educational infrastructures. Further information is available on our website at www.pandiaspora.org or via email to admin.officer@pandiaspora.org

Our registered office is in Port Harcourt and our secretariat is in the Federal Capital Territory, Wuse Zone 6, Abuja, Nigeria. Our registered logo and acronym is pandiaspora®

Pandiaspora was founded in March 2008 and was officially launched on World Health Day - 7th April 2008, to commemorate the 60th Anniversary of the World Health Organisation and the 30th Anniversary of the Alma Ata Primary Healthcare Declaration. The inaugural meeting of Pandiaspora will be held on Nigerian Diaspora Day, in Tinapa - Cross Rivers State on 25 July 2008. Satellite medical mission coordinating centers are planned for Port Harcourt, Lagos and Kano by December 2009.

The organisation aims to contribute to strenghtening the country's health workforce capacity, to mobilise and secure additional human resources, especially from Nigerians in the Diaspora. It will achieve its aims, by stemming and reversing the brain drain of intellectuals from the country. These resources will be applied to mitigate the brain waste in provision of basic healthcare and education.

Contributions of Nigerians in the Diaspora....

Nigerians in Diaspora have made signficant contributions to improve the health and well-being of different communuties of Nigerians at home. It is estimate that annually Nigerians in Diaspora remit an estimated $12b into the Nigerian economy. During the military era and over the last decade many individuals and groups of Nigerians in Diaspora have led medical and humanitarian relief missions to the country. Many Diaspora groups have donated books and equipments, delivered training exchanges and skills acquisition workshops at educational institutions and health facilties. The magnitude and impact of these efforts in the development of the country have not been adequately documented.  The potential impact of the contributions of Nigerina in Diaspora is now being harnessed for the benefit of the country's health and educational economies. It is estimated, that there are more than 80,000 Nigerian professionals in North America, European Union, Australia and Asia combined. Each year hundreds of doctors, nurses, lecturers and other professionals continue to seek greener pastures abroad thereby draining the country's health and educational systems of valuable human resources. The impact of this brain drain on human resources is that factors such maternal mortality, infant mortality and under-five mortality remain unacceptably high. The exodus implies a shortage of health care workers and educators in all tiers of education and health care provision. Pandiaspora seeks to harness these human resources and to document the contributions of Nigerian Diaspora Organisations to the development of the country. The organisations plans to directly act to bridge some of the gap in healthcare delivery.

In the Diaspora, we will be working in collaboration with other organisations and developmental partners and with "Nigerians in the Diaspora Organisations" (NIDO-Europe, NIDO-Asia, NIDO-Americas, NIDO-Africa). At home, Pandiaspora will be working in partnership with the Nigerian National Volunteer Service (NNVS), The National Academcy of Science (NAS), the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), the Nigerian Medical and Dental Council, (MDCN), Nigerian Nursing and Mid-Wifery Council (NNMC), the Nigerian Universities Commision (NUC) and the State/ Federal Ministries of Health, Education, Labor and Information.

Through innovative Pandiaspora initiatives - the "Pandiaspora Annual Health Awareness Week", the "Nigerian Diaspora Come Back Home Programme", the "Pandiaspora Rural Health Initiative" and "Pandiaspora Medical Mission Fund", the organisation is determined to contribute to the sustainable development of Nigeria.
