Pandiaspora - Mobilising and Securing Brain Gain for Nigeria

When Spider Webs Unite, They Can Tie Up A Lion - African Proverb!

The Pandiaspora Team is an integrated team of Nigerian professionals from the Diaspora, mobilizing their knowledge, skills and abilities to contribute to the Nigerian workforce. Starting in July 2008, the team will commence sustainable quarterly educational and medical missions to Nigeria. The missions to Nigeria will include training and academic exchanges and will be implemented nationwide accross all six geo-political zones including the FCT, Abuja. It is hoped that this initiative of the Pandiaspora will gain broader support.

Pandiaspora is a third sector organisation. We work on our own, In partnership with Government and Non-Governmental Organisations and through Public-Private funding mix. We implement free medical mission programmes, provide care for indigent and hard to reach rural populations, donate medicines, books and medical equipments, conduct public health research and health awareness and support continuing professional development activities. Often we are a major or only resource for health service provision for patients and major resource to people working in health and education.

Whom We Are

We are volunteer professionals with multidisciplinary backgrounds from the Diaspora and some who have recently returned home. We work in teams of mostly medical doctors (physicians and surgeons), dentists, laboratory and research scientists, nurses, teachers, lecturers, professors, academicians and other intellectuals. In Nigeria, we work in integrated teams supported by national staff in local communities and health faciltiies. Field support during medical mission programmes is provided by our medical mission project coordinators (administrative, medical and financial) and logisticians (water and sanitation technicians, driver/ mechanics and security details). Team members are self-funded and usually volunteer 2-4 weeks of their time to work in Nigeria.

What We Do

Our primary function is to support the health and educational workforce in Nigeria, and to help the Government towards achieving the Health and Educational UN Millennium Development Goals by 2015. To achieve our aims, we offer free medical care to patients in resource poor settings in Nigeria. Our target population is often elderly patients, mothers and children who otherwise can not afford access to basic medical care. Our academicians and lecturers are involved in teaching, training and skills exchange programmes in collaboration with colleagues in Nigerian institutions. In volunteering our services, we aim to support frontline healthworkers and contribute to improvements in delivery of primary healthcare services. Our efforts, we anticipate will contribute to existing Government and NGO programmes to reduce maternal and infant mortality. All our services - drugs and medical kits including surgical interventions are provided at no cost to most patients.

As well as performing voluntary placements of our teams in different communities, and conducting medical and surgical clinics, our work includes the following: advocacy for evidence based initiatives to drive progressive policy change in health and education; donating medical books and equipments to institutions, supporting networking activities to build links between school and health facilities in Nigeria and the Diaspora, we co-sponsor events to support health and educational awareness-raising activities; we conduct skills acquisition training events and learning exchanges; we collaborate on international health and educational activities and offer professional skills development and training through our junior doctors skills exchange and mentoring programmes.
